Discover Semur-en-Auxois: The Medieval French Town You NEED to Explore

We had just spent the most magical day in Annecy, we were ready to hit the road and head up to the Burgundy region. We made a quick stop in Lyon, the capital of France, then made the trek to Semur-en-Auxois on our journey to Paris. This impressive town was the perfect stop on our long drive to Paris.

When planning a trip to France, most travelers immediately think of Paris, Bordeaux, the French Riviera, or the charming towns of the French Alps. But if you want to experience the true charm of the French countryside, complete with medieval architecture, breathtaking landscapes, and a rich history, you should definitely add Semur-en-Auxois to your itinerary.

Tucked away in the Burgundy region, this Semur is a picturesque town with a glimpse into France’s past. Here’s why this should be a must-visit destination on your next France trip.

How to Get to Semur-en-Auxois

Semur-en-Auxois is located in eastern France, making it an easy stop if you’re traveling between Paris and Lyon.

  • By Car/RV: Renting a car is truly the best way to explore the region. And because this was one of our stops on our 2-week RV trip, we were able to see areas of France that you could never see by train or bus. It took us 3 hours to drive from Lyon to Semur and 2 ½ hours from Semur to Paris.
  • By Bus: Local buses do connect Semur-en-Auxois to surrounding towns, but as a foreigner, renting a car is definitely the most convenient option.

Walking around the town of Semur-en-Auxois

Arriving at most cities and towns in an RV, one of the most common questions we receive is, “where do you park the RV?” Due to the low arches and the narrow cobblestone streets of the town, you cannot drive in many areas, especially a larger vehicle like an RV. We parked on the side of the road at the entrance of the town and walked around on foot. It’s honestly the best way to experience the medieval town.

Less Crowded, More Authentic

Unlike tourist hotspots like Paris or Nice, Semur-en-Auxois offers a more relaxed, intimate experience of France. You won’t be fighting crowds at every attraction. In fact, there was pretty much NO ONE when we visited. And you’ll get to enjoy authentic local culture without being overwhelmed with so many people. The town is such a hidden gem – perfect for slow travelers who love history, nature, and culture.

Best Time to Visit

We visited during the end of April (April 23rd to be exact), and although it was still chilly, it was still a great time to visit. We didn’t have to fight crowds or deal with heat and humidity. Here’s what to expect if you visit during these seasons:

  • Spring (April–June): Mild weather, Spring flowers blooming, and fewer tourists.
  • Fall (September–November): Beautiful autumn colors and wine harvest season.
  • Summer (July–August): Lively atmosphere with festivals, although slightly busier.

Because we were in our RV, we actually stayed at a French Aire nearby, but it would be so fun to stay a night or two in the town.
