It’s that time of year again – when kids pray for snow days, and parents struggle between the balance of winter’s fun and her blistering cold. And then there’s the question of keeping your kids warm and safe outside. What is the best snowsuit for kids to wear? Which suit will protect them as they dive right in and make those snow angels? We’re here to help!

Let’s start with the age-old debate of, “do my kids even need a snowsuit?” Remember the classic movie, Christmas Story? The scene where Ralphie’s little brother, Randy, walks to school in his snowsuit, barely able to move his arms, falls, and can’t get up?
Thankfully, snowsuits have greatly improved since then. They now give kids the freedom to walk, run, and even fall and get back up. All while keeping them warm and dry from the elements. So yes, if you want to keep your kids warm and dry while they galavant in the snow, you should invest in a proper snowsuit.
So what exactly should you look for in a kid’s snowsuit? Because let’s be honest, there are many different brands out there. Here’s a checklist of what you should be looking for in the best snowsuit for kids:
If you’re contemplating whether to buy a full, one-piece snowsuit or a two-piece, let me offer you this piece of advice. One-pieces were, historically, aimed at young toddlers and children because of their limited mobility and style preference. Two-piece snowsuits were also typically equated with older children, allowing for more freedom. But today’s style and mobility have changed, making one-pieces suitable for kids of all ages. And as a parent, with these new and improved one-piece snowsuits on the market, I opted for the one-piece Chickadee Gear snowsuit that protects my daughter from the wet, cold snow better than any other suit.
Chickadee Gear snowsuits are the snowsuits of parents’ dreams. They were created specifically with kids in mind by a Utah couple who were frustrated with snow gear that never seemed to be kid-focused.
When I first started researching Chickadee Gear’s snowsuit, I dove into my past childhood winters in Michigan and my newer experiences as a parent. Together, they guided me into choosing what is a GREAT snowsuit. And here’s why:
These are truly the best snowsuits for kids – perfect for skiing, sledding, tubing, and just playing in the snow!
The first thing we did after receiving our daughter’s Chickadee Gear snowsuit was head for the mountains to test it out. We took a road trip from Scottsdale, Arizona, over to Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a snow day planned in the mountains of Santa Fe.
Although not typically equated with snow, Santa Fe, New Mexico has some fun options for snow lovers from skiing, tubing, and some good old-fashioned playing in the snow. Santa Fe’s snowy season runs from November through April with an average annual snowfall of 147 inches/year.
TIP: The months of December and January receive the most snow. So you’ll have the best chances of lots of snow if you plan your trip then.
We decided to spend our day at Hyde Memorial State Park, a state park located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Santa Fe. It was the perfect location for a day of fun in the snow. It is also a popular location for snow tubing with bigger hills for older kids and adults and tiny hills for younger toddlers. And there are trails for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing within the gorgeous pine-covered mountains. If you’re looking to ski, Ski Santa Fe is just a few miles up the road from Hyde Memorial.
So how did our first experience with Mia’s new Chickadee Gear snowsuit go?
In a word, INCREDIBLE!
Not once did I hear: “MOM, my hands are cold! “MOM, my neck is wet!”
Not once did my daughter ask to go home or be done.
Not once did we have ANY complaints about being out in the snow.
Instead, my daughter was rolling around in the snow, building snowmen, throwing snowballs, sliding down hills, making snow angels, running up and down hills, and most importantly – HAVING FUN! And she did all of this while remaining warm, dry, and happy.
Chickadee’s snowsuit was everything we thought it would be. It was easy to put on and take off, super mobile, warm, soft, and waterproof. We couldn’t be happier with our new snowsuit. Best snowsuit for kids!
And the only thing left now is to start planning our next snow day trip!
